Understanding Your Quota - Part 2 of 2

Understanding Your Quota - Part 2 of 2Understanding Your Quota - Part 2 of 2In part one of this series, we discussed how most sales quotas are formulated, how management views assigned quotas and briefly discussed how sales professionals feel about their quotas. But just knowing how your quota was determined does leid make hitting your quota each month any easier. To make your assigned quota serve you instead of being an ever-present reminder of your responsibilities, you need to learn how the most successful sales professional view their quotas and how to use your quota as a guide to your sales activities. Own Your Quota Having a positive attitude arguably provides benefits in practically every area of your life. And many (including the author of this article) believe that sales professionals who adopt a positive attitude regarding their assigned revenue quotas are often the most successful. In most cases, when you accept a sales position, you accept the sales revenue quota at t he same time. By accepting the position, you are also accepting the quota. If you complain later about your assigned quota, you are essentially stating that you made a mistake and should have never accepted the position in the first place. Owning your quota means that you are fully aware that you have are expected to deliver a predefined quota and that you understand that your hitting your quota is part of your job. It means that you agree to your quota and to your responsibility as an employee who happens to be assigned a quota. Owning your quota means that if you dislike having a quota and hate being expected to deliver on your quota, that you shouldnt be in sales. See Hitting Your Quota as the Second Most Important Part of Your Job Without question, every sales professionals first job is to take care of their customers. A close second is to achieve or over-achieve your assigned quota. The fortunate thing about sales is that focusing on taking care of your first priority often ensures that your second priority is also satisfied. A wonderful and empowering s motto to live by is that your main job duty is to profitably serve your customers. Keeping this motto in mind gives you both a focus on taking care of your customers and to earning your position with your employer. The most successful sales professionals make taking care of their customers their number 1 priority and seldom have an issue with hitting their quotas. They always think win-win and fully believe that their products or services are the best products or services for their clients. Know How Many Sales You Need to Hit Your Quota Sales is a numbers game and understanding the numbers behind your position is very important. You need to take full responsibility for your assigned quota and know exactly what you need to do to hit your quota. If you have a monthly assigned quota, you should determine how many sales you need to close on a monthly grund to hit your quota. To do this, simply calcula te your average selling price (asp) per deal and divide your quota by your asp. The result will be how many sales you need to close each month to hit your quota. Simple math to give guidance for a very difficult industry. Lastly, if you are uncomfortable with having a quota, realize that every profession comes equipped with expectations. The very reason jobs are createdis to solve a problem and to deliver a specific result. In the wonderful world of sales, that specific result is called your sales quota.

How to Think Like Successful Entrepreneurs

How to Think Like Successful EntrepreneursHow to Think Like Successful EntrepreneursHow to Think Like Successful Entrepreneurs A. Schlesinger and Charles F. Kiefer with Paul B. BrownExcerpted from Just Start Take Action, Embrace Uncertainty, Create the Future.Copyright 2012 Harvard Business School Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved. When people write about entrepreneurs they invariably focus on their behavior what Howard Schultz or Michael Dell did in building their companies. If you take that approach, you probably would conclude that every single entrepreneur is unique, so tzu siche is little to be learned from studying them you would have to be Howard Schultz to start Starbucks and Michael Dell to start Dell.Enter our friend Saras D. Sarasvathy, professor at the University of Virginias Darden School of Business. (We are huge fans of Sarasvathys work.)How Successful Entrepreneurs ThinkEarly in her work, she made a fascinating discovery, one that ran counter to the convention al wisdom. Sarasvathy studied serial entrepreneurs, people who have started two or more companies successfully. But instead of looking at the behavior of entrepreneurs which is indeed unique Sarasvathy focused on how they think. There she found amazing similarities in how they reasoned, approached obstacles, and took advantage of opportunities.Yes, of course, there were variations. But the basic approach, as she understood it, was always the same.In the face of an unknown future, entrepreneurs act. More specifically, they1.Take a small, smart step forward2. Pause to see what they learned by doing so and3.Build that learning into what they do next. This process of act, learn, build, as we came to think about it, repeats until entrepreneurs are happy with the result, or they decide that they dont want to (or cant afford to) continue.Prediction Versus CreactionWhen we set out to see if the way serial entrepreneurs think would work for everyone, we werent looking to replace Prediction. There were two reasons we werent.Prediction works really well when the future can realistically be expected to be similar to the past, and since we are advocating smart steps, it certainly isnt smart to discard something that works well in a specific situation.Sarasvathys research shows that entrepreneurs continue to use Prediction effectively in the situations where it works well, that is, in the places where it is logical to assume that the future will be a lot like what has come before. So, we were not looking to replace Prediction.Rather, we wanted to know whether the logic entrepreneurs employ when they face the unknown we came to think of it as Creaction would work for everyone else when the future is essentially unknowable. In other words, we wanted to know if Creaction could be used to complement Prediction in everyday situations that we frequently find ourselves in (Can I convince the town to add a bicycle lane downtown? Will anyone buy what I have to sell, if I start a com pany? Would I be happy chucking it all to join the Peace Corps?)We found that the entrepreneurial logic works in business and potentially elsewhere. You can use this way of thinking to complement the kind of reasoning you have already been taught an additional way of thinking that can help you deal with high levels of uncertainty no matter what kind of situation you face.Three Steps to CreactionWhat exactly is Creaction? Well, to start, it is based on acting and creating evidence, as contrasted with thinking and analysis.Heres one way to think about that pivotal difference. A dancer dances. Substituting thinking for dancing doesnt work. If all you do is think, you end up just thinking about dancing. There is nothing to show for that thought.Thinking is often a part of creating, but without action, nothing is created. This is true for even very intellectual, cerebral fields. For a task to be considered creating, you must publish, teach, or whatever. Daydreaming by itself is not crea ting. How does Creaction play out in practice? How does it help us deal with uncertainty? The process has three parts, which repeat until you have reached your goal or decide you no longer want to.1.Desire. Find or think of something you want. You dont need a lot of passion you only need sufficient desire to get started. (I really want to start a restaurant, but I havent a clue if I will ever be able to open one.)2. Take a smart step as quickly as you can. As you will see, a smart step has its own three-part logic as well.Act quickly with the means at hand i.e. what you know, who you know, and anything else thats available. (I know a great chef, and if I beg all my family and friends to back me, I might have enough money to open a place.)Stay within your acceptable loss. Make aya the cost of that smart step (in terms of time, money, reputation, and so on) is never more than you are willing to lose should things not work out.Bring others along to acquire more resources spread the ris k, and confirm the quality of your idea.3. Build on what you have learned from taking that step. Every time you act, reality changes. In other words, when facing the unknown, act your way into the future that you desire dont think your way into it. Thinking does not change reality, nor does it necessarily lead to any learning.Author BiosLeonard A. Schlesinger is the twelfth president of Babson College, widely recognized as the worlds leading educational institution for entrepreneurship. 5 Reasons Why You are Not Getting Hired

5 Reasons Why You are Not Getting Hired 5 Reasons Why You are Not Getting Hired There are many reasons why you are not getting hired. I break them up into two categories for this blog post. Category 1: You were not hired for reasons you cannot control Some reasons for not getting hired you have no control over. Dealing with reasons out of your control is easy. You know why you were not hired. Something crazy caused you to miss an interview. There is nothing you can do. You continue job searching. Category 2: You were not hired for reasons within your control These reasons are tougher to accept because it was you who caused yourself not to be hired. It is not fun to admit, especially when category 1 is so easy to fall back on. You can blame everyone all day for not getting hired, but it still does not change the reasons why you are not getting hired. We list the reasons below. 1. You did not research the company before the interview Applying online for jobs is nothing more than filling out forms. If you get yourself into an interview situation but never bothered to look up what the company does, the job interview will end badly at some point. They will bring up something about the company that either bothers you or leaves you speechless during an interview question. You just wanted to get hired and get paid! You should have checked out the company beforehand. 2. You are not being realistic about the jobs you apply for It is great to think big and view yourself as getting hired as the next Vice President of a well-known global company! However, there is one thing you forgot: Your competition and the experience or relevant skills the other job seekers possess You think, “It is a great job and I can learn how to do it.” Your competition is talking about all the reasons their resume proves they should be hired. Sometimes, you have to be realistic and accept there is more you must accomplish in your career before applying to certain jobs. 3. Your attitude in job interviews turns hiring managers off You may be the most highly skilled, incredible person on planet Earth. But if you get into a job interview and start coming across as bitter, frustrated, negative, or argumentative, you will scare hiring managers into not hiring you. They need to know you will work well within the company. Present yourself as someone who gets along well with others. 4. You are applying to all the wrong jobs This happens quite often when you apply for jobs based on the job title alone. For example, the job title ‘Program Manager” is used across many industries, yet the job descriptions are not all the same between tech, healthcare, media, finance, etc. Make sure you read the job description before applying to jobs, especially if you seem to never hear back from companies. Their silence is feedback itself into why you are not getting hired. 5. You are talking too much in job interviews In the spirit of this reason for not getting hired, I will keep it short and sweet. Stick to explaining why you should be hired based on the job description. Avoid rambling on about irrelevant topics. Talking too much in job interviews sends a message that you lack focus. That is all.

Adam Grant on how he manages his inbox and email productivity hacks

Adam Grant on how he manages his inbox and email productivity hacks Adam Grant on how he manages his inbox and email productivity hacks If there’s an Emailer-in-Chief, it has to be Adam Grant. A leading academic thinker, he’s written extensively about the role of email (and why we absolutely should reply and not ignore our inboxes).I recently asked him about his own email habits. He generously shares his tactics for being responsive and offers the two things he did to make his email life a whole lot less burdensome. Here’s an edited version of my interview with Adam, which was originally published on The Gmail Genius. How much time do you spend on email each day?Oh, my guess is three hours a day.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Does that seem like too much? How do you feel about that kind of time expenditure? It depends on the day. I do a lot of my work over email. When I’m brainstorming ideas, or giving feedback on somebody’s work, or trying to find a particular data point or story, I’ve found tha t the hour I might spend on 30 emails with 30 people is way more efficient than having two 30-minute meetings.I actually prefer email for a lot of the communication I do. I think I can usually answer questions much faster without getting majorly distracted from my work. I like the fact that it can be done asynchronously. I get to do it on my own time, as opposed to having to schedule a meeting. But are there days when I would like to spend much less time on email? Sure. You wrote an article in The New York Times arguing that we have a professional duty to respond to email. You noted research showing that workers who care about their jobs take email seriously. What else does the research tell us about email habits? As I wrote in the article, it’s a sign of conscientiousness. People who are dependable, disciplined, and organized are more responsive [to email]. It sends a clear signal that way.Second, it’s worth thinking about: in what kinds of jobs is this relevant? Most people in t he industrialized world today work in a service job. That’s roughly 80% of Americans and over two-thirds of people in Southeast Asia and Western Europe. If you think about what doing service means, it’s fundamentally about responding to other people and trying to meet their needs. Increasingly, a lot of services are provided electronically.Let’s say you’re doing customer service for an airline. It’s amazing how much can be accomplished with a Twitter response or a live chat. This is true for knowledge work as well. If you think about what the knowledge economy is, it’s fundamentally people using their expertise to solve problems. They can do that from anywhere in the world with the communication technologies we have available. Basically, if you work in a service or knowledge job, it’s really hard to imagine being able to do your job effectively and help other people if you’re not responding. There has been lots of buzz about “inbox infinity,” which argues against Inbox Zero and being overly concerned about responding to every email. What was your response to the ideas in the article?Well, I definitely don’t agree with it. I read that article - it was part of why I wrote mine, actually. I was like, wait a minute, this is really bad advice! Yes, of course, if you get 500 or 600 emails a day, responding to those each day would leave room nothing else. And unless that’s your job, that’s not going to work out too well for you. But, if you’re getting that many emails a day, that’s a broken system. I’ve heard this from some journalists who are in that position. That’s a bad submission process. There should not be one person’s inbox that receives all submissions to a newspaper. There should be an online portal. There are all sorts of ways to reduce that load.As an individual, if you’re getting that kind of email, it usually means that you’re pretty visible inside either a huge organization or outside of your organization. I get a lot of cold emails. Between books and TED talks, I have millions of people who are engaged with my content. I get a lot of email, but it’s manageable. I don’t aspire to be at Inbox Zero. I think it’s perfectly fine to have messages waiting, but I also don’t like to leave them piling up. I try to carry 10 to 20 emails unanswered a day. During really busy weeks, I’ll probably come home and have 200 that need a response because I just haven’t been on email.I think never responding is a terrible policy, especially if they’re legitimate emails. I’m not saying anyone should respond to spam or disrespectful or rude messages, and I don’t think any stranger is entitled to your time. I think the middle ground that we should arrive at is: we do our best to respond to reasonable emails on a timeline that’s convenient for us. We need to also think about: which of these are important to my priorities? And, which emails are important to doing my job well?I cited research showi ng that on days where managers have a heavy email load, they’re less proactive in setting vision, clear goals, expectations and giving feedback. But it’s only true if email is not central to their job. If you manage people who do knowledge work or anything that requires electronic communication, email is a pretty important part of your job. If you have people working with you who are not in your physical office, it’s pretty useful to ping them quickly. It’s really poor advice to tell people to ignore email altogether. That’s what I’m pushing back against. You outlined the criteria for how you decide whether to respond to an email or not. Do those six approaches hold up? Would you change anything?I don’t know that anything has really changed. One thing I do find surprising is how often people try to convince me that I’m going to get something out of helping them. I think they’re kind of missing the point. Generally speaking, if you’re a stranger asking me for my ti me, the goal is not to convince me that it’s going to benefit me. That’s not why I respond to strangers. That’s not why I generally respond to email. Most of the time, I respond because I think the request is meaningful to the person who is asking, or they’re trying to help someone else. Or if I think what they’re doing matters. I also respond if there’s an easy way to suggest something that might be useful. The mistake people make is they’re too short-sighted and transactional - assuming the only way to motivate me is to appeal to my self-interest. Anybody who’s engaged with my work would know better, right? One of the reasons I studied givers and takers is that I really enjoy being helpful when it’s not a huge sacrifice. So I would add maybe a seventh point [to the article]: don’t try to convince somebody that by doing a favor, it will be good for them. Instead, try to help them see how they can make a difference in a way that’s beneficial to you and not costl y to them. Now that I think of it, I’m surprised by the number of people who insist on meeting on their terms instead of yours - when they’re the one asking. The worst thing you can do is email me out of the blue and ask to meet with you face-to-face next week or tomorrow or whatever. You’re asking me for my time. Why don’t you ask me what the most efficient way to connect is - when it might be convenient for me? If you’re the one reaching out, let the person who is going to help you decide what the times are and when. What has personally helped you the most with how you manage email? What has been most impactful?Honestly, I think the things that have helped me the most are FAQ and triage. There are common questions that come in [via email] and it didn’t occur to me for a while - until I got so many similar questions in the same week - to create a single document for this. I put together answers to the most common questions I get and send it to anybody who asks about t hose topics. A bunch of those actually turned into articles that I published. The other thing is having a team and network of collaborators who are available and knowledgeable on different kinds of requests. I’ll give you an example. I get anywhere from 50 to 100 speaking inquiries a week. There’s no way I’m going to end up taking even a fraction of those. It’s immensely helpful to know people in my orbit who speak on similar topics, have overlapping expertise, and are interested in doing more speaking. Because I can start referring talks to them. That feels like a win-win because it helps the person who I’m not going to be able to show up for. Hopefully, it also helps the person who gives the talk. I have a bunch of people for different kinds of requests that I know I can’t field individually.I thought for a long time that I had to say yes to every request and I had to take them all myself. I realized one day that being a giver isn’t about saying yes. There are times w hen I can say, ‘I can’t do this, but I know someone else who would love to.’You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How big is your but  4 simple ways to kick the bad habit

How big is your 'but' â€"  4 simple ways to kick the bad habit How big is your 'but' â€"  4 simple ways to kick the bad habit “But,” it’s probably one of the most crippling words in our vocabulary and often the hardest to kick. Think about it. So many of us have dreams and goals that end with “but.”BUT… I don’t have enough time.BUT… I’m not good enough.BUT… It’s already been done. When we add “but” or “someday” or “if only” to our dreams we often hold ourselves back with an excuse for inaction. Because the truth is we have as many hours in a day as Beyoncé, self-discipline and endurance can trump talent, and there’s enough room for all of us to chase our passions. If we want to create a life that we love, a life where we feel deeply fulfilled, it takes self-awareness and action. You have to know what you want and then actually show up to pursue them.Sounds pretty obvious right? But there are so many feelings that can creep up and distract us from reaching our goals. Here are a few types of kryptonite that we’ve all fallen victim to:FearFear is the number one thing that holds people back from finding (and living out) their full potential. Fear is tricky to notice because it can sneak into our subconscious as a tiny seed of doubt, slowing us down with thoughts like, “I don’t have what it takes,” “what if I fail,” or “what will people think?” and so on. Over time though, these small thoughts can snowball, leaving even the best of us with a pile of “what ifs” that can paralyze us from taking action.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!PerfectionWe all want to put our best selves out into the world. But the attempt to be “perfect” can also keep us stuck. It’s easy to get caught up in all the details, which can lead to self-sabotaging our growth as we wait for everything to be “just so” before we move forward.Feeling OverwhelmedSo many of us walk around carrying the weight of unneeded stress and feeling overwhelmed- chas ing our version of success one check mark at a time. It’s so easy to get caught up in all-of-the-things that we think we should be doing, including those menial tasks that don’t actually help us gain any real ground toward our goals. But the truth is, complexity is the enemy of execution. Working in an endless state of feeling overwhelmed isn’t proactive and it slows down our efficiency and progress.Loss of ExcitementWhen we’re passionate about something, our desire can outweigh and override the hustle needed to reach our goals. But if we lose the excitement and the passion behind what we’re working toward and why, our drive can easily fizzle away as well. This can leave us feeling unmotivated and quite honestly, blah about the work in front of us which opens the door to any type of excuse or distraction. So how do we kick the excuses and stay focused on our goals when the feelings of fear, stress, overwhelm, or a lack of motivation stand in our way? Here are four quick tip s to help you kick the “but…” and stay on top of your game.1 | Make sure your vision is clear.Take some time to really visualize your goal. When you have a clear vision, and you’re working toward something that you’re passionate about, your desire can propel you past the doubt or fear. The future vision of your goal coming to life can act as a springboard to push you forward out of the struggle (whether it be stress, overwhelm, or just feeling meh).2 | Prioritize and Plan. Take time to thoughtfully break down your goals. When we have huge dreams, it’s easy to get overly ambitious and want to accomplish everything all at once. But when you take on more than you can handle, it can quickly lead to that feeling of being overwhelmed which in turn can lead to burnout. So, it’s important to pull the reins and remember that it’s a long-term game. Be strategic in planning out how you will reach your goals; break them up into annual, quarterly, monthly, and weekly mini-goals ( working forward one step at a time).3 | Take Action- again and again. It’s easy to take action when we’re in the zone, but sometimes we have to commit to ourselves and take action even when we don’t necessarily feel like it- i.e. when fear walks in the door. It’s also natural for our brains to coax us to stay in the comfort zone, to resist change. But if you want to reach your goals, you have to be willing to put in the work and embrace the not-so-great feelings sometimes. I’m not saying that you need to subscribe to a lifestyle of stress or overwhelm, but it’s important to expect seasons of hustleâ€"where you’ll have to roll up your sleeves and put in the work.4 | Choose your thoughts.Too many of us listen to our thoughts instead of choosing which thoughts we actually want to think. (Let that soak in for a moment.) We may not have a choice over our circumstances, but we can always choose our thoughts. There’s a lot of mindset training out there, but a quick way to kee p your thoughts in check is to use a simple mantra that can help you to stay grounded and focused. At Create Cultivate NYC (Spring 2019), we had the opportunity to listen to the fabulous Ashley Graham.  She shared a simple but powerful mantra that she uses to remind herself of her worth, “I am bold, I am brilliant, I am beautiful.” So good, right?!Regardless of where you are in chasing your dreams, and no matter how big your “but” is, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Everyone with a pulse deals with their own kind of fear and doubt. Chasing big goals isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.If you’re serious about reaching your and living your fullest potential you’ll need to get comfortable being bold and taking action again and again (despite the fear). And it all starts with kicking the excuses and the “but” out of your vocabulary.Sasha Kill is the founder and lead designer at Outlaw Creative where she’s on a mission to empower entrepreneurs to grow t heir brands in remarkable ways. Principles of Adaptive Leadership in the Workplace

Principles of Adaptive Leadership in the Workplace Principles of Adaptive Leadership in the Workplace In a traditional business structure, actions and direction come from the top down. The CEO makes decisions, tells her direct reports, and the decision is filtered down to the people who do the work. This chain of command style of leading works just fine in an unchanging world or with an all-knowing CEO. That’s not the world you live in, so youll want to look for a different style of leadership. What about adaptive leadership? Dr. Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky at Harvard University developed adaptive leadership as a way to work within the fast-changing landscape of today’s business world. What Is Adaptive Leadership? There are four dimensions of adaptive leadership  and they create a leadership framework for you to pursue: Navigating business environmentsLeading with empathyLearning through self-correction and reflectionCreating win-win solutions Using these principles, leaders can find methods to respond to their environments in a way that promotes creativity and solutions. No one person can come up with the solution to every problem, and that’s one of the big failures of top-down leadership. Adaptive leadership utilizes all employees and customers in order to find solutions that work. Here’s how. Navigating Business Environments With Adaptive Leadership When you do the same thing over and over, you can expect the same result. When events  are not going well, you need to change what youre doing to make the situation better. But, just how do you do that? You need to become flexible and embrace change. You need to think about approaches other than the way it’s always been done. This is more difficult than it seems. You can find situations where people resist change at all costs- we did it this way in 1992, and by golly, it worked then, so why change? One of the great failures,  when a company failed to  navigate the business environment correctly, is Kodak. You may remember film that you put in a camera. It was big business. When digital technology came on the scene, Kodak felt secure that digital would never become better than film. They were wrong. When was the last time you bought film? Kodak didn’t adapt to the rapidly changing business environment. Leading With Empathy Through Adaptive Leadership If you can’t understand where your employees and customers are coming from, you will have a difficult time meeting their needs. If you can’t meet the needs of your customers and employees, they will leave you and go elsewhere. You need to treat employees with empathy and compassion to ensure they stay and help you foster business success. Employees today aren’t happy just coming to work and doing repetitive tasks and collecting a paycheck. Customers want products and services that are new and helpful. Behold the rise of the Instapot. This is an electric version of the pressure cooker your grandmother once used, but the creators understood that the modern kitchen was looking for a modern solution to getting a healthy meal on the table. An employee could have said, “Heh, pressure cookers already exist. We don’t need this Instapot.” The employee would be right, but it was what people wanted and what made people feel better about making dinner. Empathy led to a huge success. Learning Through Self-Correction and Reflection Through Adaptive Leadership No one gets it right every time. All leaders make mistakes. An adaptive leader realizes this and is willing to make corrections to the course. This also means that in adaptive leadership, you accept failure as part of the process. You can say “we know this works, so we will keep doing this,” but the business world changes rapidly, so what worked yesterday may not work today. And even if it does work today, it may no longer be the best solution. You have to try new things. This means accepting feedback as well. What are your employees saying? What are your customers saying? Do surveys and actually look at the data. You can’t just ask and ignore. You need to reflect on what works and what does not and take the risk to change it. Creating Win-Win Solutions Through Adaptive Leadership What’s good for you is good enough, right? Well, if you want to stay in business for a very short time, this works. When you can come together with solutions that work for multiple organizations, you’ll find a lot more success. This dimension of adaptive leadership can feel strange if you’re used to operating strictly as a competitor, but what if you and your competitors could actually help each other out? If you want an example of this, go download a few independent podcasts. You’ll find that people who are technically competitors are promoting and praising each other. What happens when they do this? It turns out that people who enjoy hearing one true crime podcast also enjoy hearing others. Instead of cutthroat competition, this group is creating win-win scenarios for each. Josh Hallmark created Two Pods a Day to create win-win scenarios for podcasters. You can do the same for your business. Look for win-wins instead of divide and conquer situations. If you want to become a great leader, try adopting these four principles of adaptive leadership and witness the new life your new behavior can breathe into your organization. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

How to Find a Job in Airport Security

How to Find a Job in Airport Security How to Find a Job in Airport Security It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. Airport security, also known as airport security screener jobs or transportation security screener jobs in the US, has been wrought with controversy over the years since 9/11. These are still essential jobs required to ensure our safety in the skies. Therefore, they’re always going to be in demand. Here’s a bit of extra information about working in airport security, including how to apply. Not Just the TSA Anymore After 9/11, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) became solely responsible for final hiring decisions made on airport security employment. However, in November 2004, the TSA started accepting applications from private screening companies under its Screening Partnership Program (SSP). Airports may opt out of the TSA placing airport security screeners, to allow qualified, private screening companies to place them. And some airports have done so, such as Kansas City International Airport. The TSA developed the Program in accordance with the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA). The requires private screening companies to provide compensation and other benefits to workers whom they hire for airport security jobs, that are no less than those of Federal workers whom the TSA hires for same. In short, private screening firms cannot compensate you for less than what the TSA compensates their employees. It is an important job and compensation shouldn’t be an issue for employees. How to Apply The TSA encourages applicants to apply online for federal airport security jobs. All TSA jobs are available through  USAJobs, the  federal governments official  central job bank. As with any other  federal government job, you must apply for specific airport security jobs that the TSA is currently offering. In other words, you cant broadly apply for  any  airport security jobs that the TSA has open, nor may you broadly apply for any that might open in the future. You must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National to apply. You must also have: A high school diploma/general equivalency diploma  (GED) or equivalentAt least one year of full-time experience in security, aviation screening or x-ray work Another requirement includes some form of national service  experience, such as volunteer work with the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps or with community organizations like a local church or a non-profit organization. So if you haven’t  volunteered  your services to someone yet, now’s the time to do so if you’re interested in a position in airport security. Be Prepared to Answer a Lot of Questions Airport security jobs are homeland security jobs with national security at stake. Consequently, whether you apply online or by phone, be prepared to answer complex and nosey  security clearance  questions, and to get fingerprinted and photographed eventually. The government is a stickler for qualifications and other details. So, before applying, be sure you read all information about airport security jobs at the TSAs site, including the  transportation security screener job description  that displays when you click on an opening. You might also consider buying a  good book  about applying for federal government jobs.

How to Use Jobscan A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Use Jobscan A Step-by-Step Guide How to Use Jobscan A Step-by-Step Guide Why Resume Optimization Matters The more effectively you can tailor your resume for a specific job, the better your chances. Generic resumes are a dime a dozen and unlikely to do well in an applicant tracking system (also known as an ATS). Using Jobscan, you can easily optimize your resume against any job description and make yourself a top candidate. Jobscan Introduction Jobscan is a tool that gives job seekers an instant analysis of how well their resume is tailored for a particular job and how it can be even better optimized for an ATS. Just visit Jobscan and either paste in the text of your resume or upload a Word or PDF file, then paste the text of the job posting you’re interested in. Paste or upload your resume on the left. Paste the job description on the right. Click Scan. Prefer Video? 1) How to Scan a Resume with Jobscan (2:08) 2) Explore the Resume Match Report (2:23) ??? See the tool in action A top-to-bottom walkthrough Match Rate The resume match rate is a score (0% to 100%) based on how well your resume matches up with the job description you selected. Jobscan recommends aiming for a match rate of at least 80%. Your match rate is based on these priorities, in order: Hard skills Education level Only when an advanced degree is mentioned in the job description Job Title Soft skills Other keywords Resume word count and measurable results are not factored into the match rate. When you scan your resume, you may find that there are 15 or more missing skills. Do not feel the need to include every single one in your resume. Focus your efforts on hard skills, especially the hard skills that occur most frequently, as those have a bigger impact on your match rate.   Job title is also a factor in your match rate. If you had a similar position in the past, change that job title in your work experience to the one you are applying for. As long as your roles were essentially the same, this tactic is not considered deceitful. If you haven’t had similar job titles before, you can include it in the summary statement. For more specialized tips, fill out your Jobscan profile. When signed in, it is located in the drop down menu at top right and allows you to provide Jobscan with information including your industry and where you are in the job search process. Jobscan’s suggestions become more targeted to you personally when your profile is complete. Results and Findings The longer a job description is, the better Jobscan can parse skills and resume keywords for analysis. ATS Findings The first section of the Resume Match Report shows tips and findings most important to ATS. This includes an overview of your missing skills and keywords, section header formatting, and whether you have a matching job title and degree. Addressing any red exes in this section will make the biggest impact in terms of ATS compatibility. To increase your match rate, focus on skills and keywords, job title match, and education. ATS Tip With the ATS Tip feature, you can add the company name and web address for the job, which allows Jobscan to serve up bonus tips for the specific ATS youre applying through. Each ATS views and interprets your resume differently. For example, some ATS recognize plural versions of a keyword as a match while others do not. The ATS Tip feature matches the company name that you are applying to with the ATS that it uses. This feature does not yet match all companies, but coverage will continue to grow over time. Learn more about the ATS Tip feature with this one minute video: Recruiter Findings Next, Jobscan checks for things that the human beings behind the ATS are looking for. Variants of recruiter checks may appear in this section for different users. Measurable Results Measurable results are a crucial part of effective resumes. Anyone can list job duties; recruiters and hiring managers want to see real contributions. Turn your vague bullet points into compelling accomplishments. Quantifiable results are specific statements such as “increased sales by 40% in 18 months” or “decreased delivery time by 30 hours per week, resulting in a savings of $145,000 per month.” Most candidates can list what they did, but few list measurable accomplishments. Negative Keywords Hiring managers read resumes day after day and they are well-versed in cliche and overused phrases. Jobscan picks out negative keywords or “words to avoid” from your resume. This includes cliches and other words/phrases that might cause a recruiter or hiring manager to roll their eyes. An example of a negative keyword is “team player.” While it’s an important skill, it isn’t quantifiable and is used in far too many resumes. Resume Word Count Many ATS use something called signal-to-noise ratio, which means that pertinent information is compared to irrelevant information. So, using less text can actually help increase your resume’s relevance. As a rule of thumb, aim for a one-page resume if you have zero to 10 years of work experience. If you have more than 10 years of work experience, you can use a two-page resume- but only if you have enough quality content to require two pages. If you pad your resume with fluff, a hiring manager might miss important information. If you are in academia, you’ll use a curriculum vitae (CV) instead, which can be much longer. Many countries outside the U.S. have their own resume practices- for example, longer resumes are the norm in Australia. Skills and Keywords The hard and soft skills comparisons do exactly what it sounds like: they compare the skills included in the job description to those mentioned on your resume. Many ATS consider frequency a factor- the more often a skill or keyword appears, the more important it is deemed- and that is reflected in the match rate. Jobscan weighs hard skills much more heavily than soft skills and other keywords. You’ll get the best results by spending the majority of your effort on working hard skills into your resume. Exclude Skills Jobscan allows you to remove skills from your report by clicking the gray “X” next to a skill. This is handy when a skill is misinterpreted by Jobscan or isn’t relevant to your industry. After excluding skills, you can refresh your scan by clicking the button on the left sidebar without using up one of your free scans. This feature helps you customize your resume optimization experience. Predicted Skills Orange “predicted skills” are common hard skills frequently found in the same field or job descriptions as your scan. Jobscan utilizes machine learning to analyze millions of resumes and job descriptions to provide these insights. Including predicted skills gives you a competitive edge and could hurt your chances if you don’t include them on your resume. Predicted skills do not affect your mate rate. Keyword Context The “Highlighted Skills” section allows you to choose a keyword and see every use of that keyword highlighted throughout your resume and the job description. Keyword context helps you quickly and efficiently edit your resume and quickly view how keywords are used. Click any skill or keyword to see the context in which its used in both your resume and the job description, or click the Highlighted Skills tab. Highlighted skills feature. Variations and Recognize Plurals If a job description lists a skill in the plural or other variant form, such as “monthly audits,” and your resume lists it in the singular form (“monthly audit”), the two skills will not be seen as a match. That’s because most ATS do not consider singular and plural forms as the same word. Many users requested the ability to have Jobscan’s tool recognize singular and plural forms as the same skill. We built a switch you can toggle to see how your match rate might change if plural and singular forms of keywords were recognized as the same- but remember, the overwhelming majority of ATS on the market do not recognize different forms of a keyword as the same keyword. Jobscan also shows variations right in the skills listing. When you see the yellow semi-circle icon, click it to see skill and keywords that are close to the word you should be matching. Edit these variations to improve your match rate. Job Matcher Most job boards only show you jobs based on your job title, the exact words you search for, and your location. We believe a more relevant job is based on your entire skillset instead of simply a job title. At the end of the day, a project manager in construction is very different from a project manager in IT. At the bottom of the Resume Match Report, the  Job Matcher searches Indeed or ZipRecruiter to suggest jobs based on the top skills and keywords found in your resume and the job listing you scanned against.   Jobscan Job Matcher is an intelligent job board that matches based on the skillsets of your resume and job descriptions instead of simple job titles or search queries. The more preferences you provide Jobscan, the more relevant your job recommendations become. A version of the Job Matcher is also accessible in the Jobscan Dashboard. Screenshot of the Job Matcher feature. Power Edit Jobscan Premium members have access to Power Edit (formerly known as Live Score). This tool allows you to edit your resume based on intelligent keyword and formatting suggestions without leaving Jobscan. Watch your score increase as you work, make formatting changes, then export your final resume as a docx or pdf file. If you upload a docx, Power Edit will even preserve your originally formatting. Learn more with this short video Cover Letter Scan Some ATS use the contents of your cover letter to search and rank applicants.  Jobscan Premium users can scan and optimize their cover letters through a similar scan process.. The checks and tips used in the cover letter scanner are different than those used in the resume scanner and include soft skills, hard skills, and word count. Your cover letter scan can improve your overall match rate by up to 10%. This feature can be found after scanning your resume by clicking on the “Cover Letter” tab below your match rate. Keep in mind that you can only scan your cover letter after you’ve scanned a resume. Screenshot of the cover letter scan feature. Leadership Rewards and Recognition - Success Secrets

Leadership Rewards and Recognition - Success Secrets Leadership Rewards and Recognition - Success Secrets Today many American corporations spend a great deal of money and time trying to increase the originality of their employees, hoping thereby to get a competitive edge in the marketplace. But such programs make no difference unless management also learns to recognize the valuable ideas among the many novel ones, and then finds ways of implementing them. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi There are two things people want more than sex and money recognition and praise. Mary Kay Ash A leader makes other people feel important and appreciated. The leader excels at creating opportunities to provide rewards, recognition, and thanks to his or her staff. A leader creates a work environment in which people feel important and appreciated. The leader leads the team in their ultimate goal of serving their customer. Along the way, to facilitate this service the leader  makes sure that employees are treated as they want to be treated. How Leaders Make People Feel Important Through Rewards and Recognition A key leadership trait is the ability to inspire followership. In addition to supplying a shared  vision  and direction, leaders must develop a relationship with the people they inspire to follow them. The successful leadership relationship inspires people to become more than they might have been without the relationship. Following an effective leader, people accomplish and achieve more than they may ever have dreamed possible. The foundation of this successful relationship is the leader’s ability to make people feel important. (Sure, money and other benefits work to a certain extent, although, since money is a limited quantity in most organizations, you shouldnt overemphasize  its  importance.) An outstanding leader understands that this is how she best encourages their laser-like focus on fulfilling the needs of their customers. Employees who are rewarded, recognized and thanked for this service provide the best customer care. An effective leader needs to demonstrate these practices. Pay attention to people using common courtesy.  Say good morning. Ask people how their weekend turned out. Ask whether Rebecca won her soccer match. Ask if the employee is feeling better. Practicing simple courtesy is a powerful relationship-building tool.Listen to what your coworkers, peers and staff members have to say.  Listen giving full attention  to the person seeking your attention. If you can’t pay full attention and listen actively, set a time with the person to meet when you can. You gain much information from the ideas and opinions of others. You make people feel special when you listen to them without distraction. Know that Rebecca has a soccer match. Use powerful,  positive  language in your interaction with others.  Say please and  thank you and youre doing a good job. Say, “We couldnt have accomplished the goal without you.” “Your contribution saved the customer for the company.” Powerful, positive recognition makes people feel important. Powerful, positive recognition encourages your employees to contribute more of the same work in the future.Put praise in writing.  A thank you note to the employee, with a copy to her file, magnifies the impact of the recognition. People have been known to display a thank you note or letter of recognition on the wall of their cubicle for years. Seriously, the impact is that powerful. Keep your commitments to staff. If you have a meeting set up for Tuesday, attend the meeting. Cancellation should not occur except in a true emergency. Promised Pat a raise? Don’t do it unless you know you can keep your promise. Setting up weekly one-to-one meetings with your reporting staff? Block out the time as if it is sacred- because to them, it is. They save up things to talk with you about all week long.Give staff public credit for contributions.  You didnt think up the idea for senior staff review. Instead say, “Mary thought this approach would work well and I agree with her.” “The credit belongs to John. Isnt that a terrific idea?” You may think these actions sound a lot like leadership by the golden rule. You’re right, although a fellow consultant told me about an even more powerful rule- the platinum rule. In the golden rule, you treat others as you wish to be treated. In the platinum rule, you treat people as  they wish to be treated. These are powerful, yet simple, ways you can reward and recognize people. These are powerful, yet simple, ways to make the people you employ feel important and appreciated. The bottom line? Believe people are important. Act as if you believe people are important. People will feel important. Important people will serve the customer in stunning ways Important people will think of you as a great leader. Characteristics of a Successful Leadership Style Much is written about what makes successful leaders. This series will focus on the characteristics, traits and actions that many leaders believe are key. Choose to lead.Be the person others choose to follow.Provide vision for the future.Provide inspiration.Make other people feel important and appreciated.Live your values. Behave ethically.Leaders set the pace through your expectations and example.Establish an environment of continuous improvement.Provide opportunities for people to grow, both personally and professionally.Care and act with compassion.
